Although a relative newcomer to the market, Sonicare’s innovation and patented technology have taken it by storm. The Sonicare toothbrush, brainchild of entrepreneur David Giuliani and University of Washington professors Dr. David Engels and Dr. Roy Martin, was first produced by their company GEMTech, to later become the Optiva Corporation, in 1992.

Dutch electronics company Phillips acquired Optiva Corporation in 2000 and by the end of 2001 the Sonicare toothbrush was the biggest selling electric toothbrush in the United States.

Phillips Sonicare focus purely on toothbrushes, harnessing sonic technology for dynamic cleaning action.
